- It sounds like you have a bad memory chip in your 64. If you feel
- confident in working on it I can walk you thru it. If not see if you can
- find a local technician to help you out. If you do feel confident here's
- how to fix it.
-
- Items needed: + screwdriver
- soldering iron
- solder
- chip socket 16 pin
- desoldering iron

- This is just a quick tutorial, think what your doing as you go. I take no
- responsibility for any results from what you do with this information.
-
- First, ground yourself so you don't blow any other chips with static
- electricity. Open the C64 case by removing the three screws on the bottom
- of the case. Open case, inside you will find either a cardboard cover, a
- metal cover, or nothing. Remove if it has one of the first two by taking
- out the screws. Ohh and make sure that the computer is unplugged, that
- helps ;). Ok now what I think your problem is, is a ram chip or two that
- are blown. Ram chips are in the lower left corner of the board in IC area
- U9, u10, u11, u12, u21, u22, u23, and u24. Power up the machine and let it
- stay on for about 5 minutes. Ground yourself again, then lightly touch the
- tops of the chips I mentioned above. If one burns you then you have found
- the bad one. Look at the part number on the chip, cause they used different
- speed chips in different machines. Something like 4864-3. You need to
- locate the same chip by whatever means you have, and unsolder, socket and
- replace the old with the new chip. Power back up and compute away. If you
- have any questions or need more help just email me. Be happy to help you.
